The ENDING is just the beginning as you prep for the rewrite....

The ending of your story can be a surprise ,or unexpected, but once it’s revealed it must feel like the ONLY NATURAL SOLUTION to your story!

If you find 10 readers willing to read your script and give you feedback, most likely only two or three will answer your questionnaire at all faithfully.

That’s okay….

What you want from your readers overall is a ‘sounding’ of your script. If you thought at all about your story’s strengths and weakness (and I KNOW you have) your readers are going to be confirming some things you already knew.

For instance, did nearly everyone love the TITLE but think the ENDING went astray?  (you wondered that too —- then fix it)

The love interest just wasn’t that interesting. Who everyone really liked - except the heroine - was JOE, the buddy. (Oops, your Hero needs a magic make over … or he needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat and Wow the heroine into taking a second look) FIX IT !

The ending was good…. but it took to long to get there. (YOU knew the right? But you couldn’t resist leaving in the long, tie-everything-up sequence. DITCH IT)

These are the kinds of generalized verbal comments that you can collect over a coffee or a Coke as people return their copy of the script to you.  IF they actually return you questionnaire — BONUS.

Regardless, you should come away with a clearer idea of what to fix and why!

Then the one last thing you can do now that you’ve created your questionnaire. Sit down, pen in hand, and answer the questions yourself.

Then write a quick overview of what you think needs fixing – no longer than a page.

The LAST THING — set the whole manuscript and notes aside. Put it on a shelf to age for a few weeks or months, if you can. You want to let go of this idea as completely as possible for the moment. You’ll come back to it when the time is right. Now your job is to clear your mind, so your subconscious can go to work.

This is where the real REWRITING takes place. Let your subconscious go to work for you.
