VALENTINA Terreshkovaborn in a small village in western Russia. As a young woman, she worked in a textile mill and parachuted as a hobby. She was chosen to be trained as a cosmonaut in the USSR's space program. On Jun 13, 1963, she became the first woman to travel into space.

But there was so much more to the trip than a mere blast up and drop down. It turned out that the Russian technicians forgot to program the capsule for return and Valentina had to take charge and drive her own capsule back to within the pull of gravity to bring it back to Earth – once she noticed she was drifting further and further away from her orbit and deeper into space
